In 2017, the refugee camps on Chios were overcrowded, with poor hygienic conditions, a lack of medical care and often months-long waiting times for asylum decisions. Children in particular suffered from the cramped conditions and lack of prospects. Many were traumatized, had little access to education and rarely had safe places to play. Despite occasional offers of help, fear and insecurity remained their constant companions.
